Our garden area is a huge semi wild piece of land which was previously a  graveyard. We have tried to  introduce  only a few  play items for the children which are made of natural materials. We wish the garden to remain a wildlife haven, and to use it to grow fruits and vegetables that the children can harvest and cook.

Most of the local children don't have gardens and this area is of vital importance. It is one of the main reasons parents wish their children to come here.

We access the garden throughout the day, and in all weathers. The children become interested in the animals and plants, and note the changes in the seasons.

We have several vegetable beds, and some produce is grown in old car tyres. We also have young fruit trees. We have many more ideas on what we can do in our garden.. The parents are involved in keeping the garden safe and attractive and we hold several gardening days each year for parents, staff and children to come together and work for the day We have bird feeding posts that the children can see from our large picture windows. These also attract squirrels. The children spend many hours watching the wildlife.

The children are involved in real work when they garden, and the staff and children learn together as none of us are experts. It is healthy to see each activity as a creative process in itself, rather than being a success or failure. Our crop of beans being eaten by blackfly just shows the children that all animals need to eat and that food is not just for us.
